Exclamation Fuel Economy Sucks..

okay here's my problem with my 99 dodge ram.. gas mileage is terrible. I have a v8 5.9L.. I know thats my biggest problem. But right now I am averaging about 8 to 9 miles a gallon.. not good. I love the truck and am thinking about upgrading some things that can help improve my MPG. I was thinking a superchip, performance exhaust, spark plugs and wires, possibly distributor cap and rotor, K&n air filter, and I already switched to synthetic fluids. Also i heard that switching to electric fans has had a pretty good improvement as well. I spend about 80$ to fill (26 gallon) and i get about 200-225 mpg.. and thats without me driving like a maniac If anyone has any ideas or suggestions please let me know! Thanks!

I had a '98 1500 with the 5.9, hell of an engine. Can't kill it and the only real issue with them is the plenum leak which is fixable - but gas mileage is not it's strong suite. I had a lift and 35" tires on it and could only get double digit MPGs out of it on strictly highway use...

In all honesty you will never get good mileage from that truck just like I will never get it from mine. You are better off either living it with or getting something else to drive around in and use the truck as needed or desired.

fascistfaction accidentally dropped you in the third Gen section but it really doesnt make much difference. A good tune up with the parts you are talking about would be great. Electric fans are a goof choice. Dont forget about what type of tires you have, how big they are and how much air you have in them also all play a part in MPG.

Go hemifever tuner, a full exhaust will give you a full mpg, efan doesnt give you a whole lot but maybe 3miles per tank, cold air will give you about one mpg depends on what you buy, check plenum that could suck a few mpg out of it. otherwise that its costly upgrades like intake manifold, gears if you have bigger tires stuff like that.

At the time it was all for performance. Thats just magically what came out of it. But im also running 285's on stock 3.55 gears witch doesn't help anything.

Also have to realize that these trucks were built when gas was still around $1.00 to $1.25 a gallon depending on where you lived, they did not really care about millage then. With a six inch lift and 32's and stock gears I get around 10 to 13 per gallon depending on how I drive with the 14x3 I just put in a CAI and am liking it so far, still on my first tank of gas with it though.

Well if I had it my way I would have one of the brand new Dodge rams... I already "built my own" on a website. Lol. But I was considering possibly upgrading some things to help out.. I plan on having this truck for a while so if it turns out that these parts will pay for themselves and more in that time period then it will be worth it but its certainly something I have to think about. The thing that sucks is that the technology is here.. there are engines that are just as big and powerful and can get 30 to 40 MPG but we probably wont see cars and trucks really start to get built like that for a while.
