Default Transmission won't shift into/hard shift into 3rd gear right after engine overhaul?

My transmission has been working perfectly fine. I undertook my "engine overhaul" Thurs/fri- all new seals, new plenum gaskets (w/plenum fix), valve cover seals, new timing set, water pump, thermo, hoses, water temp sensor, gaskets, etc. Now my engine runs beautifully!

however, as soon as this project was done, now my transmission sucks? And I didn't even touch the transmission? (May be a coincidence I guess...) 1st and 2nd gear seem OK, but 2-3 won't shift unless I lay off the gas (yes, even at a "slow" accelleration it will go over redline!). If I lay off the gas real quick, it will give me a real hard shift into 3rd, and then shift above 3rd fine.

If I really nurse it (lay off the gas right when it should be shifting into third), you can barely tell theres any problem with the transmission- just shifts into 3rd kind of hard.

Any takers as to what the problem could be? Sounds like it could be a simple band adjustment, but I don't know what the band adjustment would have to do with all the engine work I just did. Is there anything related to timing, or any part I could have moved or any sorts of sensors which could be causing the problems I'm seeing? or does it really look like a freak of a dang coincidence?

I did hire a kid to help me do the work (he's a tech). He does a lot of work with me and does a good job, but there may still be something both of us are missing that someone on here may know?!?!?

Check TV cable adjustment first.

Checked the TV cable. It's fine. (adjusted it slightly, but it was within reason)

There is a vaccuum line chilling in the engine bay thats comeing from the tranny region- I doubkt thats related though.

I guess its probably just a coincidence, eh?

Does it hurt to drive it like this until I can save enough to take it to the tranny shop? They charge about 250 just to look at it/diagnose issues.

I agree seems the only thing you touched was the TV cable.
Maybe double check that its not kinked and moving freely.

Must be TV cable related though, as I just drove it and its shifting now at all gears, but its shifting late and its shifting hard on all gears now. I guess I need to play with the TV cable a little bit and try some different adjustments until it feels right.

I followed the haynes manual as to how to get it positioned in the right place, but the adjustment piece doesnt slide freely, so its about useless.

Thanks!
