Default Some Problems with Ol' Blue

alright as many of you know, i had to replace my transfer case a few months ago.

Well 2 days ago, a squeeking sound arose. It wasnt the brakes because the sound doesnt change when i hit the brakes at all. But the squeeks get faster as i go faster.

Also the sqeeks dont start until im about 15-20 mphs.

So just now i threw it into 4x4, and as i moved forward, there was the sqeek and much louder.

Put it back in 2wd, and i spun the shaft, and the squeek is comming from the transfercase end of the front driveshaft.

Now whats getting me, is that it only sqeeks when the shaft is moving. So why would the shaft be moving in 2wd, which its doing.......but its like its catching a little, stops, spins alittle, stops etc....its not spinning in sync with the rear. what would cause it to catch and spin the shaft?

I pulled my 4x4 boot up, and shifted it it to 4x4, went right in, and could feel the truck in 4x4. Shifted it back to 2wd, and i varified the shifter was all the way up. I could tell its not in 4x4, but that shaft still spins some when i drive....

fluid is about 3/4 to the drain plug, and the fluid still looks brand new ( since theres like 1500 miles on the new fluid)

help me out....i dont want to have to replace this again....

ok well, i took a long piece of metal wire, and fed it through the ujoint and wrapped it around the control arm to prevent it from spinning, but i made it so that with a little force it will come undone....

took it for a ride and no squeek....got to about 50 mph no problems whatsoever, sounded great...all i could hear was my exhaust, which i have now.( before, it ended after the cat, now i have a cherry bomb turbo muffler on, and what a difference in power)

aside from that, the wire didnt move at all so there really wasnt much force trying to move that front shaft.....

this is puzzling why it wont disengange

There is some drag inside the transfercase even in 2wd. Transmissions (manual and auto) will also spin the output shaft in nuetral if nothing is stopping them.

ok good to know.....but where the front shaft enters the transfer case, theres a bearing right there right? if so i think that bearing may need some lube

Either that bearing (which should be getting lubed internally) or if your driveshaft has a dual cardan unit, it may need a rebuild. My dual cardan unit squeaks in 4wd under load, it needs a rebuild, it doesn't squeak in 2wd even though it's a live front axle and spins any time the truck moves. My buddy's jeep also had a dual cardan wear out and started squeaking any time you were driving.
