Can't Get the carrier out of the front axle
Hey everyone, So i went to go change my drivers side axle seal out today and was doing pretty good till I went to go pull out the carrier. The damn thing wont budge! I got both races off of course and both axle shafts. Im trying to pry it out with 2 pry bars but im on the ground and cant get the best leverage. Any Ideas? Oh and i dont have a come along ;p
I'm not quite sure i'm understanding u completely. In order to get the carrier out you need to remove both bearing race retainer clamps. You should mark both clamps and the housing to put them back on the same side and same orientation. You can't remove the races without pulling the carrier out almost all the way. Thats where i'm a little confused as to you saying you already have the races off.. After that, you need to pull both axles out of the truck. then you need to remove the CAD unit for the 4WD and slide the intermediate axle out past the carrier. You may or may not need a prybar to get the carrier out. After you have the axles out of the way it should pry/pull out.
rent a case spreader.

Slid hammer you cant get the kit from advances. for best control and bang. take the hand towel from the kitchen and put a good rap around the slid and use it to get a good wipe. with out any hand pain.
did you slide the passenger side INNER axle out several inches into the cad area. if not, that's the problem.
next, i used a trick from Sheriff, to wrap a strap around the carrier, and pull on it with a come-along. it doesn't take a lot of force, but just a little extra muscle to make it "pop" out of the bearing races. with come-along tension on it, smack it with a rubber hammer.
next, you have to rotate it a little back and forth to get the ring teeth to clear the case on the way out.

ive replaced axle seals on rams before....the carrior is stuck in the axle housing after you got the wheelbearing assbly out....and pulled the axles
the fun part is putting the new seals in...i bought a tool from quad 4x4 to put them in

I have the 2 retainer clamps off and the intermediate axle out and she still don't want to move. I might just have to borrow a come along tomorrow if i cant get it out tonight.

try smacking the back side of the ring gear sideways with a rubber hammer, or a regular BFH and a block of wood. (maybe while prying with a bar).
have some way that it can't fall all the way out if it breaks loose suddenly.

cool.
with carrier out, pop the seals out to the inside. then take your time to clean all the dirt and grease and sticks and mud out of the axle tubes.
inspect the splines at the cad junction, and test the smoothness of the collar slide. file any burrs out of the splines so it slides easily and SMOOTH as silk.
replace bushings and inner needle bearing as needed. search my old posts for part numbers from alljeep.com
its tricky getting the new seals to seat straight and undamaged. some people use the expensive tool, or else you can make one from misc parts. its critical that the puller fit the seal exactly and the cavity exactly, catches the seal on the steel rim, and doesn't slip or damage the seal. if your tool doesn't fit right, stop...
and finally, whatever you do - don't use a crappy *** timken seal. use a good National (from Advance or other) or Napa/SKF. timken makes good bearings but lousy seals.
