if your not searching for gears excessively your okay.. the thing is, i seriously doubt your torque converter locked up, and since it didn't- you were amplifying torque- which heats up a tranny real quick like.

if it's not slipping, I'd guess you're okay.. but I wouldn't risk it anymore..

aight, so just to confirm, im pulling about 5-6k lbs TOTAL, I have an 01 RAM 1500 OFF-ROAD with 33" tires, im driving about 70 mph, (OD) should BE OFF even at 70+mph and at HIGH REVS, MPG will suffer but TRANS will be strong and I dont have to worry about over heating the trans? With the motor reving that HIGH constantly, I feel like im putting a lot of strain on the motor though?? I mean, driving 500 miles and doing 70mph with the engine revving at 4k rpm, thats normal?

that's about right with that kind of weight behind you.. these engines are solid when they're tuned.. wouldn't worry about the engine.. I would worry about the tranny, and the way to protect it is to keep the o/d off with anything over 1k# behind you, and no matter the speed or sustained speed..

The bigger question is why are you going 70 mph with a trailer behind you with a car on it? I wouldn't be doing anything over 65 mph, you'll save money in gas and wear and tear on your pickup. And keep the o/d off. Being a trucker i've seen way too many people pulling trailers too fast only to see a disastrous results. If you blew a tire doing 70 mph, you'd be in a whole lotta trouble in a hurry. The extra minutes it will take you to get to your destination will be worth it. Spend the money and get a weight distribution hitch, they are worth their weight in gold!

Just my 2 cents.

i regularly tow a 3-4k# camper in the summer, i have a controller, but i dont use weight distribution. my truck barely squats, and i have the controller set properly. the farthest i tow it is probly 100 miles, od is always off. havent had any problems yet, and my rear brakes probly have 50k miles left to them or so.

Even downhill or with flat areas, keep O/D off. It will generate to much heat even in those areas with over 1k lbs in the back, and will most likely cause problems later, unless you have a deep tranny pan, larger transmission cooler, etc. etc.

Gassers gotta keep O/D off when pulling. I've heard that diesels can pull in overdrive.

Either way, seems like something is wrong. Why is it at 4000 rpm at that speed?
