Default Bed Liner Rocker Panels

Along with changing my plenum, I have been pondering another project for my truck. My truck did have a lund body kit that wrapped around the truck and had running boards that I have since removed since i hated how it looked and the fender flares were holding water that caused it rust.

Any way, I was wanting to paint my rocker panels with bedliner after i grind and sand the rust spots down to bear metal, patching bad places with new metal ect. I really dont wantto invest in a new paint job at a body shop. And I dont have a spray gun to do it myself. I have seen trucks with this done to it before. Will this hold up with time? And will it prevent future rust? Im not too concerned with looks because it is an 11 year old truck. Any tips on doing this?

Also im willing to sell that body kit/running boards to someone who is willing to pick them up. They are fiber glass and white and are in fair to good shape. They would fit a 94-01 reg cab 8 foot bed truck. I would sell them cheap best offer. lol.

Fair number of folks have done the bed-line on the rockers thing. Some have even done their whole truck that way....

As for how it will hold up....... consider what it is designed to deal with. The bed of your truck takes a boatload more abuse than the rockers. At least, one would hope.

Its all in the prep work though. Read the directions for prep for whatever product you want to use, and stick to it. Even the best coating won't help if the prep isn't done right.

As for rust.... part of the problem with these trucks is they have a lot of places where road crap can get in, but, can't easily get back out. Especially if you live in the snow belt. In those cases, the rust starts from the INSIDE..... So, to really do it up, need to address that as well. How you do it, is up to you. You won't have to worry about anything getting thru the outside though.

Yeah i live in the snow belt and on a farm, so my truck is muddy a good bit of the time underneath (i know this is bad). I was planning on cleaning the underneath of it prior to doing the bedliner and spray painting a ring of undercoating so it wont rust through from behind the panels.

Does any who has worked with roll on bed liner know if you can use tape to mark your edges and be able to remove the tape before the liner cures? or is best to use a paint brush and a steady hand to cut in the edge?

i used tape and removed it about 10 mins after i was done, that way the paint thickens a little and rolls back on itself for a really professional look and clean line.

just make sure you mask off your whole truck! i used a cheap sand blasting gun from the local hardware store and i came out nice, but i did have little black dots all over my truck, it was easy to clean off with a wet rag, or paper towel and mineral spirits, just be careful that stuff will eat away your factory paint if your careless
