Default A/C quit working on 2000 Ram 5.9 4+4

It was working fine then I didn't us it for a couple of months due to winter. I went to turn it on and nothing but hot air. I tried to see if there was any codes and nothing. Is there suppose to be a code for low freon. I hate to take it to a shop without knowing what it is so they won't ripe me off.
Thank you for any help.

I've never done it myself and I don't want to mess it up. The Shop wants 275.00 to recharge it.

The most common problem with the ac is a bad evap core in the hvac box in the dash. You can get a can with UV die and DIY to see if there are any external leaks(under hood), but that won't help with the core in the dash. For that you'll need an ac shop with a freon detector.

I did, didn't work. Used it on three different trucks without success.

Is that evap can hard to get to behind the dash. Do I have to take the whole dash apart to get to it.
