Default Tuner Questions

Hey yall, I got a 99 1500 ram with the 5.9L v8 magnum. Ive been looking to get a tuner to boost my mpg. Ive been getting around 10-11 mpg out of my truck, and ive been looking to get the hypertech max energy or the superchips flashpaq. Does anyone have some suggestions on which tuner would be the best to get to boost my mpg? Thanks

SCT is pretty much considered the only tune worth a crap for our trucks. Keep in mind though, a tuner probably won't give you much in mpg gains.

+1, fixing the plenum might though.

I like the sound of this SCT....$275 for 3 tunes...the superchips and hypertech are both about 50-75 more. Can anyone with a stock 5.9L chime in on how this will improve fuel economy and performance?

Do a search here for plenum and fix that first, if you want to get the most gain from a tuner.

My 5.9L V8 has not been stock for a while, but on my wife's stock 2006 Durango with the smaller 4.7L V8, it made a night and day difference for the better. (No, you cannot use the same tuner for different vehicles at the same time. I have two SCTs, both from Sean [hemifever].)

Performance was the night and day difference, not fuel economy. I maybe notice a 1 MPG difference.

+1 you will dump a lot of money into these trucks just to gain a few mpgs. I just ordered my sct last night, didn't order it for mpgs got to help the truck run smoother

Well, if its only going to take me $275 to get this truck to run BETTER, I'll take it. Id love to have more power when hill climbing and not have to drop the pedal to the floor to stay moving. I just didn't want the SCT to get me worse mileage but that doesn't sound like the case. My truck isn't exactly "legal" yet and its not tagged. My family owns a dealership, and this truck was bought in a New York auction, and I drove it back here to Maryland. I really liked it, and I think the auction final price was $2200 after fees. Not bad! I took it. Its getting inspected this week, ill be sure to check the plenum this week. Im not expecting to buy a tuner and get 6 mpg boosted. Id like a moderate performance increase, without a suffering in fuel costs. The SCT sounds like a good choice. If anyone else has an input on fuel economy and performance after the sct let me know. Thanks dodge forum.
