Default tranny questions

How hard is it to change the fluid and filter out of a 46re tranny, i was gonna have aamco do it cuz they have done all my tranny work but they want like 300 bucks for a "super flush", and i was thinking of usinf a synthetic tranny fluid like royal purple woul dit hurt the tranny or should i just stick with just regular atf in it..

thanks mike

If you know "righty tighty, lefty loosey", you can change the fluid. if your pan doesn't have a drain plug, it'll be a bit of a pain to drain without making a mess, but can be done.

What's worked for me, break all the bolts loose, leave the corners in place, pull the rest. Then drop the corner bolts on one side ( holding the pan in place with your hand ) and back the others out 1/2 way, you can then allow the pan to "tip" into your preferably big drain pan. Get most of the fluid out, pull the remaining bolts, then change the filter and re-install.

As you will never get all of the old fluid out of the tranny by simply doing a filter change, I wouldn't bother with synthetic, just use the correct ( ATF +4 ) fluid and call it good.

ATF+4 is fully synthetic. It is also the ONLY fluid that you should use in a Chrysler automatic transmission.

Especially with our years of transmissions, any other fluid (no matter what any shop tells you) will contribute to a failure. These trannies are very picky about the stuff.
