Open element looks better, but you'll probably lose some power...The filter is just going to get heat soaked. If you think you've gained it's just because it makes more noise.

I have an open element on my Dakota, but I also have scoop and a pan to isolate the filter from the heat...It picks up a tenth or two with just the addition of the pan.

Cold air is good air.

Alrighty thanks guys, I was just curious. I have an aftermarket K&N system on my truck and was seeing if an open filter would be different.

I've tried them all, CAI, S&B Sealed CAI, stock box, 14x3 Ram air system, and the traditional 14x3 open element. If I were to get another Ram the first thing I would do is a 14x3 and call it a day. It's a nice improvement over stock, and any power loss in heat is more than accounted for by the amount of air you are sucking in. Only way you could tell a power difference would be a dyno. Plus they are cost effective and look great.

Any of you guys running the 14x3 rig up a fitting to the bottom plate for the breather tube to hook to?

Instead of just pushing a breather in there. I know years ago there were base plates that had a punchout in them for hooking an elbow on there. I don't know if the newer ones do or not. I haven't even looked, I just thought I'd ask first.
