Default 4WD Low Gearing Not Engaging

2000 Dodge Ram 2500 4WD with 5.9L Gas Engine

I am having issues with the 4WD system and am racking my brain as to what the problem is. I figured I would post on here and hopefully get some insight.

2WD works fine as well as 4WD High seems to work fine. The issue is 4WD Low. It says it shift into 4WD Low(ie. the dashbaord lights comes on) and all 4 wheels are pulling as well. However, for some reason it does not engage the low gearing that it should when in 4WD Low. It is the same as if in 4WD High.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to check. I am not familiar enough with the transfer case to know what physically engages the low gearing. Is it the shift mechanism attached to the floor shifter which selects the low gearing or is it something to do with the vacuum lines that are connected to the transfer case?

Any suggestions, help, or just general information on how the gearing is selected is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

It is all chain driven, so I would guess if there was anything broke it would be loud.

Your shift points will be different and you will rev a lot quicker in 4lo compare those to 4hi.

I haven't had the truck long, about a month now. When I bought it, I did test 4WD and both 4WD high and 4WD low worked as it should. But for whatever reason, as I stated 4WD low does not have the low gearing but all 4 wheels are pulling. I have not heard any loud noises or anything out of the ordinary that would lead me to believe something failed inside the transfer case or elsewhere. It's drives exactly like it is in 4WD high when the selector is in 4WD low. Also, it's shifts easily with now resistance or grinding into both high and low.

I am not sure but I can check the actual size tomorrow and post it.

But they are a stock size tire. It does not have larger tires that are solely for offloading or anything else out of the ordinary.

Max speed in 4 Lo will be about a third of 4 Hi. If you are getting 4wd, but, not low range, you have an internal problem in the t-case. Sounds like the range fork is having some issues.......

That's what I was afraid of. I have a factory service manual but it wasnt real clear on what exactly engages the low gearing but I was afraid it was a shift fork inside the t case. Its probably internal in the t case.

Thanks for you input.
