Default Lift pumps

I have a 2001 dodge 2500 turbo diesel. My question is how long does the lift pump run. Mine will run for 20 seconds after bumping the starter. Mechanic told me it is supposed to run continuously any time the key is on. Does it cycle while the engine is running. If so what determines its cycle, is it oil pressure, fuel pressure or volume? Mine does not come on when I first turn on the key.

I am planning to replace the lift pump with an aftermarket pump. Which pump has everyone had the best luck with. FASS, Airdog ect. ect. and what gpm is best for a edge EZ chip, 100 or 150 gpm?

Thanks for the time.
