Default Transmission Failure, Possible.

1998 Dodge Ram Quad Cab. About 92500 miles on it.

Still had the original Transmission in it, was coming home from Mississippi went up a hill and the transmission slipped. Was able to get it to the house OK. Checked fluids, no noises and nothing seemed wrong.

Went out for a short drive to see if it would do it again, transmission wouldn't go into reverse or drive, went in neutral there is a squealing noise coming directly underneath the cab.

I'm unsure if it's a Transmission failure, but I am sure it's likely as that's what will go wrong with most these pickups.

Could someone help me confirm this? Really would hate having to drop the transmission and that not be the problem because this is a costly repair.

Sure sounds like the trans...... You can drop the pan, and see if anything obvious presents itself. (parts laying in it, an undue amount of metal shavings, things of that nature.)

Do you get first or second gear? Does it make rude noise in those gears as well?

It might be a simple fix...... but, the simple fix might also be temporary......

I can put it into Drive, but it won't go into gear after tapping the gas. It's an automatic, I'm wondering if it might be the clutch.

It only makes the noise when in neutral though.

Well, this is really odd. Ended up being able to get it into Reverse and going up a hill in reverse. While doing that it began squealing. Loaded it up on the trailer, it squealed while in Neutral and Reverse but not in D 1 or 2. However it wouldn't go into Drive to load it onto the trailer. Had to use momentum from the hill to do that as using the reverse was hit or miss.

I'm taking it to a transmission shop today to have it looked at. It might not be the transmission from what a friend of mine said that works there. We'll see. After this, I shouldn't have any major problems with the truck for a long time.

Blah.

Careful what you say there.

If I were a betting man, I would put money that your trans is toast.

I wouldn't take your money because I'm feeling the same way you are.
