Default 4x4 issues

So about 2 weeks ago I went to put my truck in 4x4 the light wouldnt come on...so I started questioning it. I am not forsure if it is engaging or if the light is just broke.. what could be causing the light to not come on? and how do I tell if my 4x4 is engaging?

go get stuck and then put it in 4x4 and see if you can get out.haha no you should be able to jack up the front and spin the tires with it in 2 wheel drive and then when you put it in 4x4 one of the tires i think the passenger side should have resistance or not spin( not exactly sure on our trucks but this is how it was on my previous truck)

as above, but, with the engine running.... (need vacuum to make things work.) With the front end up, t-case in some variety of 4wd, (doesn't matter which) if you spin one tire, the other tire should spin in the opposite direction. If it doesn't, start tracing the vacuum lines involved with the cad.

also when you spin the tire in 2 wheel drive the front driveshaft will spin, in 4x4 the front drive shaft will be locked and will not spin.

With the front end supported, truck in 2wd.

Front drive shaft should spin freely.
Spin one tire, nothing else should move.

In 4wd:

Front driveshaft should NOT turn.
If you spin one tire, the other tire should turn the opposite direction.

Or just put it in four wheel drive on a hard and dry road surface and turn, you'll feel if the front is engaged or not.

If you find you are in 4 wheel drive you could simply have a broke wire from the 4x4 switch. You will need a meter to check to check the switch and the wire to the plug on the opposite side.
