Default Lost all gears suddenly

I have an 01 ram 1500 2wd, 46re transmission, 112,000 miles. I was driving through town at about 40 mph when suddenly I lost all gears. It would move under it's own power slightly in 1st and reverse but reverse is real jerky. Fluid is clean and doesn't appear or smell burnt, no chunks in the pan. When I pulled the valve body out and started taking it apart I discovered the Accumulator spring is in three pieces and all pieces are inside the piston.

Does anyone know if this would cause my problem, or should I be looking for something else?

Replace the spring, reassemble, and give it a shot. If you didn't find anything obvious..... (aside from that..) it might just be a cheap fix.
