Under The Valve Covers (Good or Bad?)

that looks like the previou owner changed oil at 20K mile intervals. Switching to syn oil will flush that gunk out over time...and many oil changes.
That looks pretty bad. Mine were clean as a whistle at 50K miles. But I change my oil and filter every 3K miles or 3 months with mobil 1. WHichever comes first. It is just an OCD thing i have with my vehicles. Probably not necessary, but it keeps the engine clean.

Why would you change oil at 3 months? I fully understand 3000 miles but I have never understood the 3 month part. I only drive my truck when I'm off so I only put a couple hundred miles on it a month. Why would I need to change it with only 1000 miles on it in 3 months?

The main reason for periodic oil changes in rarely used engines is to counter the long-term effects of acidic blow-by components in the oil.
That said, three months is almost always way too soon unless you live in a very humid climate. The "three months/3000 miles" thing is a marketing gimmick -- though it's a reasonable interval if you mostly make short trips of less than five miles or spend a lot of time in stop-and-go commuter traffic. If your use of your truck fits the Light Duty Schedule A service, the factory service manual puts the interval at 7500 miles/6 months.
