I agree my father was the owner a union 76 ( We should be old enough to remember that - they are went under where I grew up in the 90's) I spent many a day as a child helping dad fix customers cars. But what I really liked to do is play with all the air tools and lift the floor hoists up and down with the dog on top of it. anyway... lol... I got my 7 year old out in the garage when I lifted my ranger and he helps everytime I change the oil. Hes alittle young to really care right now but as he get older and its his turn to drive I bet his intrest turns on more. Right now I use him to pick up the tools and blots I drop in engine... lol his hands slip right in there are retrieve my lost tools.... Anyway my wife and I enjoyed looking at the park pictures. After I leave germany we should be going to Alaska or back to Oklahoma City. I can forsee a nice camping trip out there if I get stationed in OKC. Im jealous you can just drive right there from home spend a day an drive back..... Only thing I am not jealous of is how over priced everything is there. I guess you get used to it.

Cheers

Excellent How-To Steve. I filed it away for future reference too. Hopefully articles like this will keep coming for every Ram repair job. I plan on contributing too.

thanks, I have a few others to write to, head swap, timing chain swap and roller rocker install. As luck would have it, I'm swamped right now so those are on the back burner. I figured with as many pics that I took during the teardown back in may, I should easily have enough different ones to be able to do the DIY's mentioned above.

A little off topic, but what kind of mileage are you getting now after your mods steve. I might be dropping you a PM about doing a tune up and what parts you recommend using, specifically brand. I enjoyed reading your post while doing your mods. Can't wait to read some more.

the best milage I've had since doing the mods has been 14.85 on memorial day weekend. coming from Redding to Sacramento and doing the speed limit (more or less) of 70 mph with 3 other people and all our camping gear. I should also mention that we had the a/c on the whole way.

last weekend I measured my mpg on a trip and got 13.8 using the big air filter (I wanted to compare vs the small filter I had on for the memorial day weekend trip).

All of my mods are not listed in the sig so here they are and my reasoning for some of them...

r/t heads... stock is junk. they crack between the valve seats.

gibson headers... because the cat's on my 2000 are right next to the heads and a plugged cat caused heat damage to one of my exhaust seats.

double roller timing chain... stock chains have some sort of nylon on them to keep them quiet. after about 40k that nylon is gone and you endup with a loose chain. I had about 1" of play on my old chain when I took it off (and have pics too).

Hypertech programmer. advances the timing for upper end HP.

180 deg t-stat... mag motors run better at 180 deg

52mm throttle body, more airflow and just plain rocks... throttle response and power improved greatly

Crower 1.7 Roller Rockers... cause I'm greedy... ok, no it's because it reduces the valve train friction and is good for 12~15 hp across the whole rpm range. I have the guide plates and hardend rods.

Modified Intake manifold... stock intake manifold restricts airflow to a degree... I cut my runners down 1.5" from stock, opened up my fuel injector bores and cleaned up the throttle body bores. Put this motor in a 2x4 SB truck and it would scream. pulles hard after ~2700 rpms clear up to redline... not the best setup for a 4x4 QC truck so I'm going to mod another kegger to .5" off the runners and the same mods to the injector bores and TB bores.

MSD off-road ignition, coil and 8.5 super conductor wires... MSD is one of the best ones out there in my opinion so I stick with them. this helped low end a little I think. the motor reved a little easier after the install.

mobil 1 15w50 oil... just plain smart...

flowmaster 50 series dual out kit necked down to 2.25" to keep low end torque. I'm almost curious to see how this motor would run with the stock 2.5" dual outs...

K&N FIPK II... stock filter helps with low end torque, I have a 2nd filter which is a 7x9" filter. this filter helps even more on the upper end HP. I'm thinking that after the next intake mod, I'll have this filter on all the time.

most of the time my mpg is around 12~13 mainly because I have my foot into the throttle alot. grin factor....

Hope this helps... feel free to PM me if you have any Q's...
