Default Wheel questions

I have a 1995 dodge ram 1500 with the stock rims and caps, I am trying to paint the steel rims with some issues, I have attempted to sand them down and was able to do that, now when I am trying to paint them I am using krylon but it's for lack of a better word bubbling or separating, rims were wiped down and blown with air before hand of painting, other question, the chrome plated centers with the ram head, some of the chrome is peeling, how can I remove all the chrome and repaint them? I got chrome paint by the way.

sounds like it still has wax or silicon on the steel.
can you wipe it down with paint thinner or acetone or alcohol or some other solvent?

Hi

It seems to have fixed its self when I put a little thicker coat, now I need to figure out how to take the chrome plating off the center, any ideas?

i doubt its coming off.
you might be able to scratch it up with some 220 or 100 sandpaper to give the paint something to stick to.

Thanks for the advice guys, I got it working, I will post pictures later . They will need to be sandblasted in the future but at least they look decent now.

I used Plasti-dip spray on my Wifes grand cherokee. Looks great and it's been on there for about a year with no issues.

I experienced the same issue when I did my rims last fall. I'd spent an hour or so sanding and prepping each one and thoroughly wiped them with acetone prior to hitting with the primer. The first pass or two with the spray had me terrified, but once I thickened the coat a little, it all fell in good. Put two coats of automotive rustoleum primer followed by two coats of black wheel paint followed by two coats of satin clearcoat. They still look as good as new today.

As for the center caps, I cleaned them thoroughly with a soft brush and acetone and could not get the primer to adhere. I finally just ended up cleaning them up (they weren't in bad condition) and hit them with two coats of the satin clearcoat that would adhere evenly, as opposed to the primer. Nice and shiny. Add new lug nuts and I actually had someone asked me what I paid for the new rims.

Enjoy.
