New Dodge owner getting fustrated!
Hey guys!
First off I am new to this site, hence my very first post!
A quick background on me..... I'm 37, in the Philly PA area, always had Chevy trucks, been an auto mechanic for 15 years but out of the buisness for the last 4..... (Yes, I started turning wrenches fresh out of high school at the age of 18).
I just sold 2 older Chevy duallies and bought a 2002 Dodge Ram, quad cab long bed, 2500, 4x4 SLT, 5.9L, auto. The rig has 114,xxx milkes on it and I bought it from a private party 5 weeks ago.
Now the reason why I am getting frustrated...... As I said, I bought this truck after selling 2 older Chevy's to gain something newer and more reliable. Knowing the truck needed some work, I got it for a good price. In the 5 wweks I have had it, I put 200 miles on it and have done the typical Dodge repairs.... Upper & lower ball joints and the lower column bearing from Dave over at Rock Solid. I also put on 4 new tires, front end alignment, and a complete tune up. I am now battleing the famous P 601, P 0455, and P 1740 codes. I ordered a new computer and am waiting for it to come in as that should take care of the 601... Put on a new gas cap and tightened up all loose clamps on the filler hoses, as well as checked for cracked hoses and lines..... None found light still on. But the p 1740 code is killing me. Pulling the transmission is no problem for me but in all my years spinning wrenches I have never got involved with transmissions, other then R&R. I have read up alot online and see that theres several reasons why this light could be on. But I am pulling a 30' travel trailer half way across the country in a few short weeks, and want to fix the problem, but dont have much time or cash left to throw at a transmission. My local dealer says that the sensors in the trans go bad so often that they have them in stock. My local trans shops all have different opinions on what to do, from a complete rebuild to the pcm throwing out false codes since it is also bad. The trans fluid is as clean as can be and the transmission shifts beautiful....... I have to pull the OD unit off of the back to replace the broken OD snap ring, which i also read is very common.
Anyway, any suggestions as to where to start with this problem? Sorry for the long rant but I have so much to do before I leave and hardly have time to breath, and I just dont know where to start with this transmission code without doing alot of unnessary work!
Thanks in advance for reading and I look forward to becoming a regular here!

Clear all codes. Take the truck for a drive, someplace where there is very little traffic, and you can get up to 50 or so safely. Accelerate slowly from a dead stop, and count the shifts. should should see 4 shifts, first one won't be that significant, next two will be noticeable, and the last will most certainly be...... You should be running under 1700 RPM at 50 mph. If you aren't, check the TCC wiring external to the trans. (especially if the code resets.....) If the wiring outside looks good, drop the pan, change fluid and filter, adjust the bands, and replace the TCC and O/D solenoids. (they generally come as a set.) You can download the 01 service manual from the FAQ section here. Should be close enough, and you can study up on what you are doing before you actually have to turn a wrench.
For the 455 code, probably dried and cracked lines back at the evap cannister. Its under the cab on the passenger side. Behind the front seats I think.

p0455, If you don't find any leak, the problem is probably going to be the Leak Detection Pump. The repair manual diagnostic chart will send you all over the place.
As for the P1740, I dont think the problem is the Snap ring breaking off. Even tho it is common, but that usually accompany with other trans problems, Like No Reverse gear or funny shifting in O/D.
As for the Solution, Master Tech in this forum is probably the Best guy to ask, wait for his response.
is ur Ram 2001 or 2002? because for 2001 with 46RE Transmission, there is a TSB 21-11-00 that requires you to replace the transmission pressure boost valve cover plate.
