Air Cleaner Questions
I am debating doin a 14x3 air cleaner but is there anything bigger that would take in more air for my truck to breathe? and what are the pros and cons to this setup?
You don't need anything bigger unless you're running well over the stock rev limiter.
Pros:
Cons:
Pros:
- Reduced intake restriction
- Easily visible
- Easily accessed
Cons:
- Especially at low vehicle speed, intake air is preheated by the engine
- Fitment: break a motor mount and the air cleaner might be driven into the firewall, which might break the throttle body and/or allow foreign matter into the intake/combustion chambers
- More likely to allow water (stream crossings, driving rain) into the engine. It takes but one drop on the top of a hot piston to destroy that piston
I'd give it a try. I've had mine in for about a month and love it. Not having a bulky CAI frees up room and makes things look nicer.
Most folks who run 14x3's love 'em. I once lost an engine to one when water got past it, so I hate the darn things with a purple passion. If you've already got a CAI that you're happy with, there's no engine performance reason to change it unless you're really cranking up the cubic inches and/or running well above the stock rev limiter.
It will pull in around the same temps that your Spectre is pulling in. I had a 14x3 on mine and had no issues with it except for really hot days here in FL. It rains here almost every day in the summer time, never had a rain issue. Nor has my father in his 70' torino, 71' Boss 351, and 70' vette, all of which have Holley 14x3's.

i ran a 14x3 for about a month, then ran a edelbrock pro-flo air cleaner for about 4,5 months, and 2 days ago, slapped my stock airbox back on. With my a$$ dyno, i seemed to pick up some low-end torque by switching back to stock. Think ima throw a k&n filter into my stock airbox and call it good. The 14x3 and pro-flo made some cool sucking noises, but imho, if you dont have major engine/ exhaust mods, you're losing low end torque by switching to something made to give you high volume of intake air, and not being able to get rid of it.
Now i haven't compared on the highway passing power, since I switched back to stock, but my guess would be that pro-low or 14x3 might help out if you downshift and wrap the engine out (needing alot of air), but regular driving wouldnt really require it.
Either way, I was really happy with the pro-flo, but since i very rarely see above 2k rpms, the stock airbox was the way to go. I have yet to stick a k&n filter into my stock airbox and see what happens. According to this forum tho, the stock airbox has alot of good qualities in the lower rpm range.
