Without a tune, you are just running rich and wasting gas. Might as well cut your pre-cat o2 sensor. That makes you run rich.

And i don't take offense to a newbie like you who puts their 180* thermostat in their signature as an engine mod.

It would work without a tune if your truck is not computer controlled. As in a carb setup. Most of those cars have 160* thermostats.

Hemifever knew i was running a 180 stat and before he knew about he he stated to get one. Never know he might suggest it cause he tunes it for a 180 stat. In that case have a tune for it

I have emailed sean aka hemifever. To straighten this out for me. To find out if he tunes for the 180 or if he did tje tune for my truck with the 180 if so then there really isnt anything else to say on the subject.

Sorry to say, but he isn't the end all-be all...these guys on the DF are pretty smart guys. I wouldn't just let what they say fall by the wayside.

I've posted four times in this thread.. three times I've repeated this.. dang..

the 180* stat's purpose in his tunes is simple.. in a perfect environment, it allows the engine to stay ahead of the heat curve.. If the engine is cooler you can safely advance spark.. he advances spark with his tunes.. that is the sole reason he requests it.. if teh spark is advanced close enough to TDC on a hot engine, it will ignite the load BEFORE it reaches TDC, and you will get pre-detonation.. that is all.. that is it.

It would be presumptuous to speak about someone's truck that you have never seen or worked on. If he says that his truck is running the way he wants it with whatever mod he wants who are any of us to tell him he is wrong? I personally have real time information displaying while driving that talks directly to the ecu. And it says I am getting better HP and mileage with a 180* thermostat and no tune yet.

he tunes for the 180*....which is why he recommends it. So you can get the most out of a spark advance. Without something telling the computer to advance the spark...the 180* is not really going to do anything.

with my real time information (Wideband O2), I have noticed a richer enviornment when the engine runs colder (in the winter). It hardly even gets to 180. Then, then it is 88+ degrees out, the engine runs leaner, with better performance.

And the reason I told him he was wrong was because of his response to my post saying it was "the stupidest thing I have ever heard." That set me off.

Still see that he has the 180* thermostat in his sig. That must have taken some classes at the tech school and some extra tools to install.

this message is from hemifever after i asked him about it.

"the 180 stat reduces cylinder temps. The cooler your engine the better it performs over all. With or without a tune. The cooler engine also uses more fuel. The cooler engine allows the more aggressive timing curve in the 93 octane tune to function better w/o the chance of spark knock. "

I'm not arguing with anyone but it makes sense that a cooler engine would run better.
