Help me decide
I was pulling my trailer couple days ago and my fan couldn't keep up. I was running about 205 with a 180 t stat. I'm figuring because of the 33's with 3.55 gears, so I'm getting Richmond 4.56 gears. My question is, is a Truetrac at 500 some odd bucks worth the money I've read about them a little bit but I'm on the fence yet. If so is that much money the lowest price for the Truetrac I've searched almost everywhere. Any other ideas on keeping cool with 80 to 90 degree weather and towing would be great to
I have a taurus/mark IIV fan set up on mine. Low kicks on at 185 and high kicks on at 195. Best investment I have ever made. Im running 285's on 17in rims and have never had an overheating problem. Even when driving from Alaska to Oklahoma to New York. PM me if you want all the links where I got the kit. All and all it was still almost half of what the black magic setup is.
I dont think "air around your motor" is your problem. I have pulled a 24ft gooseneck steel stock trailer loaded with cattle in 96 dodge, completely stock, 318 auto and never had any over heating problems. And that was in the middle of the Oklahoma summer. You need to look into either airflow problems in the radiator or coolant flow problems. Throw your stock fan back on and see what happens. Ambient air temps around your engine is not gonna affect your overall temp, but if you have no air flowing thru your radiator, your truck will still overheat at -40.
I don't have my fan shroud on could that be the problem? I've thought about putting stock fan back on for the summer to keep the truck cool but then I need to get a fan shroud again.
YES!!! Put your fan shroud back on. Put all the material around your radiator. The point of the shroud is to move air thru your entire radiator. The more stagnant air you have the more heat it holds in. You dont have to use the stock shroud, get some aluminum, and make one. Anything that will help your fans pull air thru the entire radiator. I also think you might want to start looking for other causes. Like how old your thermostat is. How plugged up your radiator is with bugs, dirt, mud, small children, etc. If your radiator fins look like someone has done a Mexican hat dance on top of it.....heck, even check the cap and make sure its still sealing good. Little things can make a huge difference.
Radiator and T stat are bout 2 years old I only have the heating problem when towing my trailer. I'll have to check into getting another shroud. As far as small children go lol I should be good havnt seen my lil cousin around lately hahaha. It might need blowing out im always running around the farm so im sure there's dirt.

I would ditch the electric fan setup all together and go back to stock. Very rarely will an electric fan setup pull the same CFM as the stock viscous unit.
A little extra drag on the engine is well worth not risking overheating your truck because of a couple useless electric cooling fans. If you don't have the stock fan and shroud, go to a junkyard or pull-a-part and pull everything that you need. My local pull-a-part had at least 5 trucks that had everything still intact.
Looking at your signature, I can see that your truck really isn't setup to tow with the modifications you have listed. With those mods, it sounds like the thing wouldn't tow too well at all actually!
If you don't mind me asking, how does it tow?

She's got plenty of power, my biggest problem is 3.55 gears wit 33's I'm going to be ordering 4.56 in the next couple days. I had no problem hauling the same stuff in a 6x12 trailer is was the extra drag of the new enclosed trailer that killed me. I have also thought about adding the stock set up with the E-fan in the summer and then ditching the stocker in the winter, but that is a lot of work.
If it was me and I wasn't gonna go any bigger than 33's (kinda hard to pull a trailer with tires much bigger than that), I would go with 4.10's. Im running 285x70x17's which are actually just a hair bigger than 33's and I can tap the brake and break them loose any time I want. No problems with pulling my trailer and when I get back one of the first mods is gonna be a gooseneck ball in the back. Its up to you but if you ever plan on pulling a trailer down the highway for any length of time and dont plan on ever putting 35's or bigger on it, go with 4.10's.
