Default 4x4 steering

my 99 ram 1500 4x4 5.9 is having problems turning in 4x4. The 4x4 seems like it works and the wheels are spinning. I had my truck on a boat launch and needed the four wheel to get out . When I got off the lauch and starterted to turn the truck it made awful grinding noise. I stopped swiched back into 2wd and didn't hear it again. I tested it on my street taking 3 point turns in 4wd and it sounded like my front wheel bearings were gonna break. But as soon as I go back into 2 it's fine. Is this just because I had 4wd engaged on a hard surface or is somthing broken

Don't use four wheel drive on dry pavement. You WILL break things. The behavior you describe is normal.

The 4X4 on these trucks requires some slippage when turning, otherwise the driveline binds and as Heyyou said you can majorly fubar your axles.

What you describe is "Normal" , but should be avoided.

when i try sharp turns in 4wd i get a lot of hopping and slipping, but no grinding.

any grinding is very bad, and is likely the axle half disengaging from the collar. whatever is grinding is eating away on something, and might be creating burrs on the collar which will make it not engage/disengage properly.

as said - our trucks are part time 4wd and designed to be used in slippery type conditions and not dry pavement, so avoid that.

any time you get grinding - stop... something is wrong.
