Default New to 4X4....any tips?

99 Ram 1500 4x4.

Whats the procedure for putting it into 4x4?

The guy I bought it from said he never used 4L so he didn't know, but he said for 4H to stop the truck, put it in neutral, shift into 4H, then put it back into drive and go, the opposite to put it back into 2H.

Can u not shift while moving at speed? Ive read u can just shift in and out of 4H while driving down the road...but I don't want to break stuff.

Whats the procedure for 4L if I ever need it? I know its only for being extremely stuck, etc.

You can shift to and from 4H while moving slowly, but to use 4L you need to shift into neutral. Make sure you don't use it on dry pavement, but if you're testing it out just go in a straight line.

sometimes 4L will resist.. when it does, i've found that a very slow roll (after dropping into neutral) and a firm tug will drop it right in.

So what speed should I be under when shifting to/from 4H?

less than 5mph for 4L

less than 55 for 4H

Thats normal and do not continue to do that on dry pavement or you WILL break something.

not bad.. if you think about it, your tires travel different distances when they aren't on the same exact path.. you're just feeling that bind between front axle and rear.. nothing to worry about. don't do it when you have good traction though- as said, you'll break something.. something has to give when opposing forces meet.
