The retainer is not pressed in or anything like that, it is held in by the snap rings which are made oblong to accomodate them. Nothing is dangerous about it. I just replaced my U-joints the other day, so I know what I'm talking about here. The peice is not necissary, but I find it a great convenience. If you don't like it, take it off. Also, the yolk doesn't have to be removed to remove the snap rings.
Its just a strip of metal that lets the endcaps rotate slightly but they are there so that your caps dont come off. for shipping purposes. you can take it off or leave it on. It doesn't matter.
