Pinging problem...
Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later... smaller combustion chamber, more air flow, 100 deg outside temp. pinging...
I cannot find anything wrong with the motor, no codes from the PCM, engine temps never get above 190ish. when I got home last night it was in the high 90's, cooled down from a high in the low 100's when it was pinging at it's worst... I measured the heat shield temp at 114 deg and the metal part of the air filter at 105 deg. UNACCEPTABLE!!! damn it, it's not really a "cold air intake" if it's getting this hot. So I went down to the speed shop and picked up some thermo tec heat shielding to put on the outside of the shield, then went to Home Depot and picked up some thin sheet metal to seal off the suspected area's of where I'm sucking in the engine compartment heat. I'm hoping to have it done by tonight (dont see why not...) since it'll be in the low 100's for the rest of the week. the plan is to seal the air filter area 100% of any engine compartment heat and insulate the shield and plug any air gaps that are there. I'll post pics of the setup when I'm done.
this should fix it...
Last weekend I took it up into the mtns hiking and it ran awesome... so it has to be the heat.

Well, there you go... I went to far and now it pings with the 93 octane hypertech program with outside temps over 98~100... damn!
I insulated and isolated the intake as best as I could but it didnt help. I yanked the IAT plug just to get it home, then I pulled my hypertech program and went back to stock [sm=boohoo.gif] and no more ping. So what this is telling me is the timing is advanced too much for my current setup. I might try the 87 octane program just to see if I can get away with it, but I sure do miss the 93 octane program... that s/w rocks!
time for the crank sensor mod to pull the timing back?
Colder plug?
any ideas?

I had pinging with 93 octane fuel and 93 octane hypertech setting on hot days too, so I backed it down to the 89 setting, but I still run 93 octane fuel. Pinging is gone, and I noticed no change in performance at all.
here's a link to the mod http://krcperformance.com/newcontent/timing.html
the programmers are around $350
Reed... my truck is at the point where it takes full advantage of having the timing that far advanced... I miss it!!!! a friend of mine has a tool that will allow me to monitor all of the sensors (in groups of 4) to help figure out a way to make it work in 100+ deg days... so that' will be the next plan of attack...

I know this maybe a stupid question but can somebody explain to me or post a pic of the crankshaft sensor on a 97. The article said it was on the passenger side but every sensor on my tranny is on the driver. Thanks in Advance

Not sure if anyone could actually get a pic of it, it's right behind the passenger side head on the bell housing and I think it actually mounts to the block not the tranny. reach around the passenger side head (when the motor is cold) and feel for it.
