Default Backlash in my rearend messed up

Well, I brought my truck in for some warranty work (Found out that the extended warranty covers part of battery costs!!!). I told them about a banging sound when I am in an incline and take my foot off the brake when going in reverse. Even happens going forward when I take my foot off the brake.

Well, they diagnosed it and told me that it was the backlash in the rearend, it was messed up.

Just waiting for what actual parts need to be replaced. Good thing they are covered. All I have to do is pay for diagnostic time and fluids. They are hooking me up with an optima battery too.

Anyone know what can cause the backlash to get messed up? I don't take the truck offroading, so I am stumped.

I believe a worn pinion bearing or crush sleeve not set correctly on install can cause that.

never thought it would happen to a factory part. Guess it is because my truck was made in saltillo.

everything wears out eventually.

can't figure out why my passenger side wheel bearing went out at 60K, but the driver's is running strong at 112K.

Pinion bearings and crush sleeves do not change backlash, only pinion bearing preload and pinion deflection. Worn carrier bearings will cause the backlash to open up, it happens over time. The old 7.5 in my B2 had .020" backlash and was just fine.
