Default Couple Questions 96 1500 v8 5.2L magnum

Two questions:

1) Long time ago my power door locks went out. I was told this was the power door lock actuator. I have a friend who is parting his dodge out and Im pretty sure the actuator is somewhere in the door. Has anyone replaced this and know how to get the actuator out and in without much trouble? Should I just buy a new one and replace with a fresh one?

2) My gas gauge went out a LONG time ago. When I fill the truck It reads full tank, after about 40 miles it says its empty. I know its not as I know my mileage and I should always get at least 200 miles per tank (thats when I fill it) Anyone been in this situation? Ive heard it can either be the gas floating valve inside the tank or the sending unit itself. Any Ideas? I have been researching these and most I come up with is 2-4 different places could be the problem. Can anyone help me narrow it down?

Thanks guys appreciate your help

It's my understanding the door lock actuators are part of the latch mechanism, so, to change 'em, gotta change the whole thing. (another winning design.....) If one went out, and then the other stopped working some time later, the actuators MIGHT be to blame, more likely is an electrical problem. There is a factory service manual available for download in this thread. Grab that, and browse thru the wiring diagrams, and see where you have power, and where you don't.

Might be the gauge, might be the sending unit...... Gotta drop the tank to find out which one for sure though. With the sending unit out of the tank, in your hands, you can measure resistance of the unit, and see if it sweeps smoothly or not, as you move the float.... if it does, its fine, if it doesn't, its broke. One member was able to bend/clean the contacts, to salvage his.

When I hit the door lock actuator I hear it going GRRRRRRRRRRRR like its trying to unlock the doors. Infact sometimes it actually still succeeds, but as time goes the chances of it working are getting smaller and smaller and it hasnt worked once this year. Sounds like it has power and it trying to work but isnt engaging. Where is the actuator located at??? behind the door handle?

As for the gas i think it must be the float because it works when completely full (completely bouyant) then after 40 miles it moves down and whammo nothing. Is lowing the fuel tank a real PITA? i can just keep filling up at 200 miles like i have the last 5 years lol.

Run the tank almost empty..... makes it a lot easier to drop. I think there may even be a DIY in the FAQ section.

For the door locks, might wanna take off the inner door panels, and have a look around inside the door. Actuator should be right near the door latch. (the part that holds it shut.) Or, if nothing else, there will be a linkage that goes up to it.....)
