I have read where you can drill a bung into the oil pan and run the sending unit through it.

For the most accurate reading it's wants to be in the pan(as stated) near the sump. However, I personally would not waste my time with a temp gauge. I'd install a pressure gauge instead.

If your trying to install an oil temp sensor. Buy a oil sandwich adapter and screw the sensor probe right into the sandwich as directed. It's as easy as that.

He obviously thinks he does.

It's an oil pressure gauge, not a temp gauge.

no i dont think i have a oil temp gauge in my truck. I KNOW IT IS A OIL PRESSURE gauge.
i have never like the gauge system in my truck. as long as the gauges read in between the lines or in the middle all is ok. i want to know what the actually water temp is and what the oil pressure is and the actual volts are in my truck. it is usually a good indication of trouble coming when the gauges read lower (or higher depending on the system) than normal.
it is like checking gas mileage at every fill up. if your mileage drops and the driving has not changed then somethings wrong and fixing it early usually is cheaper than fixing it AFTER it broke.

Then why al the questions about a temp gauge?

You have to screw a T into the top of the block next to the distributor for the stock sender and the new aux oil pressure sender to screw into...keep the stock oil pressure and water temp senders or the PCM with freak out.
