2wd off roading

The BEST solution would be a selectable locker (ARB, Ected, etc.) because it's an open diff when you want it to be and fully locked when you flip a switch. But it's also the most expensive.
Spools are pretty cheap, but just like welding the spiders aren't very streetable. Some automatic lockers aren't bad on the street but you'll get some ratcheting on turns and premature tire/hub wear.
A good LSD with a fairly high bias (Detroit TruTrac, Auburn Gear) would be good and less than half the cost of a selectable locker...

I went offroading in a sandy beach area next to the arkansas river. It was an area that has the water level vary (100 yards from a dam). I damn near got stuck in the sand because the top 1 inch looked dry, but under that it was damp. I was afraid that I would have to leave my truck there and it would get washed away. I managed to get out of there with 4WD and some praying. But I got stuck because I stopped. So keep momentum, no matter how slow.

i used to keep two 3'-2''x12''s with a v cut in the ends (almost like a birds mouth) in the bed of my old ford
that way if i got stuck alone, i could wedge them under the back tires to gain traction!
or you could find rocks to pile under there, but they tear up tires pretty bad
also when im off-roading or even mudding i never let it go above 2000 rpms for an extended time, i just like to putt around and climb stuff!

Exactly. It is a pretty good method for getting a truck unstuck, but also a good method for ripping a tranny apart. I've seen several folks tear teeth right off of gears doing this. It isn't as bad on a manual tranny, but still not good for it.

Not really a set amount of time. You may never have an issue, or the next time you do it the trans will break.

Good aggressive tires and at least a good LSD in the rear is essential, but a spool or locker would be better. Also, if you plan to go it alone, then it's very important to have a way to get UN-STUCK. With the influx of the Chinese made winches on the market now, they are VERY affordable. But in a pinch even a heavyduty come-along or a Farm-All type jack can manually winch you out of trouble...
