Van to Ram engine

its the same basic engine and it should fit fine, however - you'll likely need to transfer over some things from your 96 to the new motor -
1 or 2 coolant temp sensors. any other sensors that are different?? maybe the intake (and fix the plenum). maybe the egr valve if you have one, or build a block off plate.
possibly move over the accessories or accy mounts.

I just got done swapping a van motor into my truck I encountered 2 problems 1 the motor mounts are different you'll have to swap those and 2 the holes where the truck motor mounts go on my block where all corroded and rusted to **** so I had to drill and tap the holes and upgrade to bigger bolts

Yeah it was just another 318. I used the motor mounts of my truck blond just bolted them where they are supposed to be on the van motor if your bolt holes aren't bad it should only take 10-15 minutes to swap them to the van motor

Why rebuild it if it has good compression and is a good running motor it's just a waste of money in my opinion well not a waste just you could do better things with the money

I want an engine that I know will last me awhile longer. I have been looking at ordering a remanned long block, but that is pushing 2 grand. So I figured I could at least take it apart and check out the condition inside, and if it is good enough I will probably put it back together or re-seal it to be sure. My current motor has 180k and the rings and valve seals are shot. I could replace them, but I think the heads are gone too. So I was going to put a solid motor in and slowly start to work on a 408 possibly or a really nice 360 .

Well I went and looked at the engine earlier, and it's in almost too good of condition. Turns out it came out of a 98 Ram truck. The yard didn't know how many miles were on it, so neither did he, but he was getting compression ratios of 160-180. He was going to make it carbureted so he got rid of the original intake. The cam (from what we could feel/see) looked in very good condition. My mechanic friend who was with me said that it MIGHT have around 75k miles at most. He is even going to include a brand new cam with it that is just a little better than stock? I can't remember which was which, but it was 218 and 232 for duration and lift or something like that. But hey, its brand new!
So I think I may get it here soon and have a machinist friend magnaflux the block and heads and see what I'm dealing with. I know the stock heads are crap, yes, but if they're in good condition, I'll be happy. Like I said he bought it in very clean condition and hadn't done any work to it besides painting the block and heads black, and the valve covers silver. He even installed a double roller timing chain too!
Any and all feedback is welcome and appreciated on this find!
