Oil Question
Ok first off my truck needs a new Plenum. It will be getting one shortly.
Now onto my question. With steady every day driving the oil level will drop to where the dipstick reads NONE.
I have no leaks so I'm blaming this all on the plenum.
Now even with the dipstick failing to show any oil the oil pressure will stay around the 50 - 60 range.
Now since the dipstick didn't show any oil I figured what the hell and put 5 quarts in it. My thinking was it's all gonna get burned up sooner or later. Well that was about 4 weeks ago and as far as I can tell it hasn't used ANY oil. The oil level is well over Full.
My oil pressure won't stay as high as it used to, it normally runs a squeak below the 40 mark.
I do have plans to have the engine rebuilt in January or February with income tax refund (I have 4 kids so tax season is nice to me!) but I don't wanna blow it up.
Should I drain out some oil and play it safe? I'd just hate to have it over full and none of it leak just to drain down to a normal level and it start using oil.
Thanks

Wow, what a mess, dude.
You just threw a whole oil change worth of oil in it because it didn't read any on the dipstick?
Did a woman teach you how to work on your truck? Wait, that's insulting to women.
Seriously, who does that?
Anyway, drain out all the current oil and start over with exactly 5 quarts. of the oil is relatively new and clean, you can recycle it into the engine, but at least put a screen on the funnel to catch the big stuff.
Too much oil can be as bad as not enough. You put too much in and the crank and rods slam down into the oil pool. Do that 2500 times a minute for hours on end and you can have a problem. It causes the oil to cavitate and carry air bubbles thru the system. Instead of lube, your engine parts get air. You can figure out the rest.

Yeah it's not one of my prouder moments. Taking care of it.
But on the other hand just because your dipstick shows you have no oil, it doesn't exactly mean you have no oil.

Well I thought it had all burned up down the plenum. I know that there is oil in the oil filter but I've never been taught different but to add oil when the dipstick reads none.
Anyways, lesson learned.
Oil has been drained and refilled. Let's pretend this never happened
