Transfer Case Issues

96 Ram 1500 4X4 Transfer Case is trying to engauge on it's own as I accelerate...the grinding sounds nasty but goes away once at crusing speed.
I've been told that I can remove the front drive shaft to avoid further damage while I save some $$$ to get it fixed...true?
