Default 2001 Driver Side axle installation?

I have searched and haven't been able to find my answer. When replacing the wheel bearing assembly my drivers axle came out with the hub. Now just so I'm sure when reinstalling the axle shaft does the drivers side just float until 4 wheel is applied?

Because not knowing exactly how the Dana operates I want to know do I need to engage the axle splines when reinstalling the axle shaft or just slide it in and attach to the hub assembly?

Sorry new to this and didnt find answer. Thanx

on the drivers side (note its the short side), the axle splines will reengage with the differential when installed. it does not float/freewheel, but turns full time.

be VERY VERY VERY gentle on the axle seals when reinstalling. the seal is at the diff, so you have to lift the axle and find the hole... when installing. also grease the axle end to help it ease through. and - try not to push the dirt in the bottom of the axle tube into the diff and its ok to rake out the dirt if you can.

Ok. Is it possible to install the hub if the axle isn't seated correctly. Because currently I have the axle installed hub and everything seems it's lined up. Inner part of axle yolk is about say and inch from housing tube. Everything looks and feels correct. Just don't want to damage the new hub or anything else driving if installed incorrectly.

i think it would be impossible to locate the big nut, stub shaft, and bearing in the right place if the axle was not engaged with the diff.

the picture looks good. make sure your 12 points are tight. those pull the bearing into the knuckle. then make sure that big *** axle nut is tight, something like 180-200 foot pounds and has a cotter pin or lock tab.

before tightening anything you should be able to feel some diff resistance if you spin the axle, since your turning spider gears.

after its tight, you can crank the truck, shift into 4wd, and IF the stupid CAD works, it will lock the passenger side axle. you can then turn the engine off, and spin the drivers side tire and see either the passenger side tire turn backward, or the front drive shaft spin. either one confirms the axle is engaged.
