Default 96' 1500 Tranny issues

Just got another project, a 96' 1500 Ram, auto, 2wd.

I've read up on this issue here but I'm hoping for some advice before I get knee deep in the tranny.

Cold or hot, she wraps up to 3 or 4k rpms before shifting into 3rd, then she'll jump right into O/D. Sometimes I actually have to let off the pedal a little and she'll shift.

Tranny fluid is ok in neutral, and it looks like the check valve is still in place by the rad cooler.

I'm thinking governor solenoid.

Any advice out there? Thanks guys.

Have you tried changing the filter and fluid? Also, one of the products to help with hard shifting/ shudder might help also.

No, haven't done that yet. I've only had her for around 4 days now and I work for the railroad hauling trains. Going home now to start working on her.

I've noticed a few threads about the check valve 'delete' on here, my Ram still has it. Would it be a good idea to remove mine? Just don't know how important of a mod it is.

Id start with the governor solenoid, tv cable adjustment, filter and fluid change, and throw in band adjustments just for good measure.

MonteC, I'm going to to do all the above- except I've never messed with bands, is there a 'how to' link?

I'm already going to feel knee deep witht the solenoid.

In this thread you'll find the factory TV cable adjustment. https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...-in-trans.html

I still havent found a thread on band adjustments.

Update > Removed pan and changed filter, it was B A D L Y clogged up. Cleaned the pan and magnet so well I was tempted just to use it for cooking food on the stove.

Since the fluid looked a little murky, I'm going to start slipping a tube down the dip stick hole on occaision and pull out/ replace whatever fluid I get. I'll do this a few times until I think Ive replced most of it all. Just alot easier than installing a drain plug & less trouble/mess.

Its still 'late' shifting, but since its not doing it into 2nd, im going to stay away from a cable adjustment.

Im now convinced its the gov solenoid and sensor.

Does anyone know this: In the DIY thread on replacement it states that the valve body has to be removed, but in other threads' pic I noticed it was right there on the bottom of the body. Can I replace it and the sensor without removing the valve body?
