Tune up!
took my truck to the shop due to it refusing to go over 70 thought maybe i had a major problem.. but it was just a clogged cat and it needed new plugs wires and distributer cap... shop tried to charge me 900 to replace the cat and do the tune up but i laughed at them and said no thanks.. so i took my truck to auto zone got the plugs wires and disributer for 70 bucks and replaced them what a difference a good tune up made even with out having fixed the cat yet gained back a noticeable amount of getty up..
(the distributer cap is a pain in the a** to get to though especially over a hot engine)

yeah ik thats what i thought and it ticked my dad off cause its the shop my dad always goes to and they have always given good deals and i had even got work done on my truck before about a month ago for pretty cheap but for some reason this time he called told us what was wrong and told us the outrageous price, which i had already known i needed the tune up and i had a feeling the cat was clogged but my dad thinks i know nothing about anything so he had me take it to the shop and said if i was right he would pay for it till he heard how much it would cost and said heres my debit card go get your parts if you can diagnose the problem you can fix it lol which is what i wanted to do anyway... but as far as the cat goes im just going to delete the cat most likely.. but my dads drinking buddy has a muffler shop and if my dad can get a good deal from him i may just take it to him and have him delete the cat and just run all new exhaust and put a flowmaster on.
They were probably also charging extra for the new parts. After I bought my first vehicle (91 Chevy S10 Blazer) it needed some work done. A new CV Axle, called a recommended shop and told them I would supply the part and they said "Well if your gonna supply the part we're not interested" and he hung up the phone. No ****.
So I went to a different shop, they told me straight out front if you supply the part it will be cheaper, if they have to buy the part, it will be more.
It's hard to find an honest mechanic or shop these days.

I used to be an honest mechanic.....
(I am still honest, I just don't do the mechanic thing for a living any more.)
At the independent shop I worked at, if you wanted to bring your own parts, we just didn't have a problem with that, but, we wouldn't warranty the part..... if the part failed, we would work with whatever vendor supplied the part, if they would pay for labor to replace it, if not, then we would inform the customer that we weren't going to fix it for free. Sure, we did the work, but it was the part that failed, and we wouldn't be responsible for that.
I really loved the folks that would bring their car in for some exhaust work, and two weeks later we were being sued because their engine blew up...... It was "our fault" that we didn't notice they hadn't changed their oil in 20000 miles..... Yeah, right.

Well you are exactly right. That's honest!
