Ditch the y pipe for two separate pipes off the headers that will turn into one under the truck, use a y two in one out, and yes a "good" set of shorty headers are worth it.

Put the y in before your cat if theres room.

These are the guys I think you want. This cat converter. (yeah, hideously expensive there, should be able to find them elsewhere MUCH cheaper.....) These will be direct bolt ins. Shouldn't need to modify much of anything in the rest of the exhaust. You WILL notice a difference in power, and noise.

is this something the Muffler guy would have laying around? or do i need to buy one first? Can I reuse the stock CAT this way? Or do I need a high Flow to make it all work?

Even if I get the Y- the muffler guy will need to fab the pipes for me anyway right? SO get the headers, install them, get the y-pipe then drag it down and have him do the rest? lol

If you get one of the magnaflow free flow cats that comes with the y, it will drop right in. (as much as anything does with exhaust....) merc's suggestion is also good, and may end up being cheaper..... most exhaust shops have the capability to bend pipe..... so, anything they don't have, they can make. Advantage of the aftermarket stuff is, mandrel bent pipes. Most exhaust shops do NOT have a mandrel bender, so, the inner part of the bend gets crimped in, restricting flow. May not be much better than what you have stock. If you find a shop that does have a mandrel bender..... have at it. They can prolly custom you up something for MUCH cheaper. Just get a good free flow cat, and fab up the rest.

This is what I'd do. $109 on ebay for the cat. Built in wye pipe. 2 1/4" inlets and 3" out. Any decent muffler shop could plumb it in for near nothing. It would work with the header kits that come with the higher flow midpipe/downtubes too.

Universal cats are 80 bucks . I would put stock back on that would defeat the purpose of fully taking advantage of short headers

Yea thats what the Muffler guys said. Stock CAT has more airflow than most aftermarket ones [his words] and his as high flow as it gets for this truck. So the Long and Short of it [pun intended] is....I got the painted pacesetter shorties. Not going to mess with anything else. I was told I had my truck set up as well as I could without cracking it and doing the cam etc.

Thanks for all the input.

Now i have one last issue [for now] that I am going to start a new thread about.

Truck is eating oil pretty good, about 2 quarts every 4000 miles. IT is also making a clacking noise on the passenger side valve cover second cylinder in it sounds like. Pretty sure dodge lifters are not adjustable so I think something is broken? I changed the oil and put a bottle of lucas in it for now. Still clacking [could be a pully or something and i m totally off] but using a magic stick, i isolated it to the above indicated spot.

Could also have a bad plenum. But it idles great, performs great [little sucky on the low end] its jsut noisy and burning oil.

No leaks. Everything is tight,

What does this mean? new lifter? =[ Broken Rocker? I am not to happy about pulling a valve cover off to see whats wrong, ad not experienced enough with a dodge to see it off hand if I did crack it. Fun..Fun..

Erm, the stock cat SUCKS for flow. Get a magnaflow high flow single in, single out cat, and a jegs offroad y-pipe, splice the cat into the y-pipe, and enjoy increased power.
