I have a 01 1500 2wd with the 5.2 and auto trans. The orginal tires were 225/75/16 but I went up to 265/70/17 off an 05 Ram. I believe I have a 3.55 gear now, not sure what the ratio is with the bigger tires but I want to regear. I pull a trailer with my wrangler on it 4-5 times a year and wanted to get the power back I lost because of the bigger tires. I figured 3.73 would bring me back close to stock but thought I might even go up to a 3.92 gear. Would that be to low for a daily driver even with the 17" tires? I've looked at other gear threads here and done nothing but confuse myself on it.

I probably do 50/50 hwy/city driving.

 

4.10 ould be best not much of a diffrence from 3.55 to 3.92

You shouldn't bother until you've done more research on what you want out of your truck.

You will never get better mileage than bone stock with any "performance" modification. If mileage isn't a concern you wouldn't be considering 3.92 gears.

You have to pick: mileage or performance, you can't have both. If you try to split the difference, you'll only be out $1000 and not completely happy with either alternative.

 

4.10 won't be to much for a daily driver? If you don't think it is then I'll take your advice, I just don't want the engine screaming because I'm running 70 on the expressway. I only use the trailer maybe 4-5 times a year. I'm not concerned to much about milage even though I don't want to lose any, I only get around 14 mpg combined as it is.

I just want the truck for a daily driver that I can pull a trailer with every now and then, I'm not worried about how fast it can go. I would like the stock power back I lost with the bigger tires, it's not that bad but just enough to irritate me.

 

I have 4:10's in my 2500, at 70mph I'm only at 2k rpm.

 

I know I'm new to the boad, but here is a good site for gear ratio calculation. www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html There are many others out there but its the one I like because it automatically knows wich gears are in specific transmissions and transfercases. It's pretty accurate.

 

That's what I wanted to know, I guess it really shouldn't be much different with a bone stock 5.2 then?

That's pretty cool, it won't let you calculate a 2 wheel drive though. I used a NP231 transfer case to run the calculations and it came up with around 2100 rpm using a 4.10 gear.
