I have read that gutting the cat is actually worse then leaving it as is or getting a high flow cat. Something about the gases slowing down in the empty space.

That's scavenging, gutting the cat is fine, you just don't want to put too big of pipes after that. You need some back pressure too.

Well that's why I was asking. With the plenum replacement coming I need to at least check out the condition of the cat, see if it needs to be gutted or if it's ok.

I thinkin some JEGS Off-Road Y-Pipes and a magnaflow muffler. With or without the cat it outta sound pretty good. Plus the K&N under the hood.

That's fine, just don't put 3" pipes on it or something crazy.
