Default DR 97 1500 problems running starts and then dies

Hello,
I am new to the truck world and just picked up a dodge 1500 4x4 with about 180,000 miles on it for the last 2 weeks it ran fine, Then the other week the check engine light came on while my wife was driving it. She saw the oil was low so as she was by a walmart she stopped in and got them to change the oil. A week later after not driving it I went to start it and it starts and runs but as soon as you take your foot off the gas it dies.

My father in law said it sounds like it is the fuel pump and told me to carefully tap the fuel tank. I did this today and the first time it started and ran with out any issues. I turned if told the wife I was going for a quick drive got back in and turn it on and had the original problem again of it dieing as soon as you take your foot off the gas.

Any ideas of what the problem is ? the check engine light is not on at the moment but each time you start it as soon as you take your foot off the gas it will die. I tired to keep it at a certain rev spot for about about a minute but it still died on me. Did tapping the fuel tank all over help any or is this just a old wives talk ?

If the fuel pump was bad, tapping the fuel tank can sometimes jar them into working again temporarily.

I'm not sure about your stalling problem, but I would look into the IAC actuator on the back of the throttle body. There should be troubleshooting instructions in the Factory service manual that is located here in the FAQs section.

Won't be a bad idea to check fuel pressure also. And before Zman pops in, I would check out the plenum thread (it should be stickied, or in the FAQ section). The plenum plate gaskets on the bottom of our intakes blow out allowing a large vacuum leak and oil consumption. Unfortunately, basically all magnum engines are affected.

Hope this gets you on the right track until someone else shows up!

*edit- fyi, The plenum thread is the top "Sticky" thread in our 2nd Gen ram forum. Should be easy to see. But make sure you stop by the FAQs section. Honestly, I have probably learned more in the FAQs section than I have from the main forum.... Worth the time and effort to read most of the threads there.

Well i tried it just yesterday and it started right up, I did find that it lacked power and would drop to about 50mph when going up the smallest of hills with foot to the floor. I put some fuel cleaner in it and about 10min later it was much more powerful I was able to pull 70mph up hill with out flooring it.

Plugged in my phone and pulled off "P0441 Evaporative Emission Control System Incorrect Purge Flow" from the error history.

I had resat the gas cap in my last batch of testing so maybe that's all it was and a bit of dirty gas ?

Entirely possible. Run some more fuel system cleaner thru it. See how it does.
