Default Oh thank God, a Ram forum not full of idiots.

Pleased to be here. I've been to a couple of other forums and found them to be uninformative and not helpful at all in fixing up my "new" truck

Anyway, I picked this 99 2500 gasser up for $1800 last week to be my "winter beater" and daily driver.

Sorry for the big picture, it's a long truck.

Anyway, it's a solid runner, but has a variety of issues. At 226k, I'm thankful all I'm dealing with are some piddly issues. As of now the speedo is inop (brake light and CEL on as well), it steers like a herd of cows, and it makes the bizarre sucking noise under load and upon acceleration. The PO installed a new plenum gasket (common problem on the 360). I installed a new belt thinking that the sucking noise was really a squeal.

Anyway, looking forward to gathering info here and helping out where I can. I'm a shadetree mechanic so I have done a lot of my own work, especially on Jeep products.

Can someone point me in the direction of where I can find info on the axles on this truck?

Nice ride and Welcome to DF. Make sure the gasket is installed between the TB and air filter housing. And the brake light/speedo problem is most likely the RWAL sensor on top of the rear diff housing.

Maybe $1800 wasn't such a deal after all. But I'm a tad jealous of that price.

If your brake light and ABS light is on and you can feel any sponginess bleed all four of your brakes insure there is no leaks/holes. Thats why mine was going on after I did my rear drums and shoes, one of the backs bled all the way out. Probably not your case but its worth checking.

When I got my 99 Ram 1500 with 5.2L, it had CEL, no speedometer, and ABS brake light on. Also would not shift. Thought it was all connected to PCM and it monitors/controls all of these. Took to local mechanic who found a damaged wirin at PCM. It fixed RAWL and Speed. Thransmission turned out to unrelated.

I would check wires and connecttors on PCM. Wiring diagram may point you to approriate wires or connector.

first thing i'd do is start doing compression checking to see what you can learn. That sucking sound could be minor or major. Nice score BTW. Even if you had to replace everything you'd still be ahead on cost as compared to a new truck.
