thermometers in georgia stop at about +20* and we don't understand negative anything. but i'd think 5W would be better than 10W and 0W might be even better than 5.

i have no idea what synthetic oil does at cold temps. unless its somehow gets less thick then i wouldn't think it would be any advantage.

dang. its expensive.

5W or 0W both work OK in the nice long cold spells you get. I sure don't miss those temps

Just want to say if you haven't been putting in synthetic I wouldn't recommend it. It will loosen up build up that was keeping worn seals from leaking and you will start burning oil.
I did it on my previous car at 150,000M and it went from no smoke to blue clouds, but the engine didn't have ticking lifters anymore. Just my .02

it does, just takes about 15 minutes of driving

I was thinking about running some seafoam through the engine for 15 mins or so before I change it out....would that be a bad idea?

I have changed two engines with over 150,00 to synthetic with no problems. I have also had my engine sit out in the negatives for several days and had no problem starting up. Synthetic is thinner at colder temps therefore easier starts. Even a synthetic blend would be better than strait dino oil.

just my two cents.

Ya my engine ran much better with synthetic but it also cleaned up a worn out motor that I didn't know was worn out lol. I was happy with the results just not the blue clouds. Plus most people will say if you haven't used it from the beginning don't go full synthetic, stay conventional or a blend.

I got my 96 with 67,000 miles on it, changed over to Mobil 1 at 70,000. Using 15W50 now year round. Temperatures here can go from zero to 100+. Doing good at 123,000 miles. Use 20W50 in my 87 since new, now at 173,000 miles no problems.
With these newer engines now days I would not use these heavier weight oils but go with OEM recommendations.

there's an app for that...

actually its a good one. called "units".
search "units" and it has a picture of a yellow scale. from The MacBox.
and its free.

it converts anything to anything...
for example did you know that 5000 Pounds is 357 Stone
.5 Carats is only 100 milligrams
100 acres is .15 sq mile
100 US dollars = 70 Euros = 1.2 million peso
