Default Truck jerks when put into drive or reverse

I am new to this forum, and I have several questions about transmission. From what I have found there are 2 different auto transmissions the 2nd gen ram used. The 46RH (hydraulic control w/ overdrive) for 94-95 models, and the 46RE (electronic control w/ overdrive) for 96-02 models. My first questions is what is the difference between hydraulic control, and electronic control? Also my 46RE has a t.v cable. The guy at advanced auto parts wanted me to buy a transmission control solenoid. He said that would stop my jerking problem. I told him i would think about it. Since it was $134. Im wondering does it even have a control solenoid since it has a t.v cable? My transmission fluid was low almost almost a quart. It shifts alot smoother now, but still jerk when put into drive or reverse. Could it have been damaged? I looked under it when some one put it into drive or reverse, and when it does the drive shaft turns, and that's were the jerking is from. So is it normal? Thanks

Not normal. Probably the torque converter. TV cable just tells the tranny to shift up or down based on the throttle position. But i have never heard of anyone here swapping a TCS.

If the drive shaft is turning when it jerks it's not the trans, either the rear axle or the rear u joint. Either way it needs to be fixed ASAP because both problems will get very expensive if they grenade.

Also, for any transmission related questions, I suggest going to the DIY section and searching "transmission." You can also find service manual there for other questions.

I agree on driveshaft or rear end issue as mentioned by ghost4321. That slack will only get worse and eventually turn into an expensive repair/replacement. Be careful taking advice from parts sales unles you know and trust them. Their job is to make sales, and if they sell you something you do not need, they will then sell you something else. Be sure before you buy.

46RH had a mechanical governor assembly. (what the trans uses to time shifts) RE model had a governor pressure solenoid, and sensor. Aside from that, there isn't any difference between them.

What year is your truck? Two, or Four wheel drive? How many miles on it? Power windows?

When I had problems with harsh engagement in my transmission ('01 46re) it was a broken snap ring inside the overdrive unit on the back of the trans. Pretty easy to fix...don't have to pull trans., just overdrive unit
