Default Truck Drives Fine In First, But Drive Is Another Matter

Hey All,

Have a 98 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9 V8 with a problem. Starts fine, put it in drive and it drives SUPER slow/sluggish, acts like it is going to die, and if I continue going it makes a very loud clang noise like my axle is coming off.

Here is the kicker, if I start off in first, switching on up to drive it works just fine. Any clues ya'll??

Thanks in advance!!

Ther is a service manual located in the DIY section for 2001. Should be the same. Excellent section on transmission with troubleshooting list. I would check there.
