Default axle shaft question

Quick question, broke another ujoint the other day(getting new shats now..) was wondering if next time one breaks or if i break a axle shaft if i can just remove it and drive with out it safely? When it broke this time i did and had no ill effects.`I was more wondering about if i need to the leave the stub shaft in to hold he wheel bearing together. I didn't this time and the wheel bearing stayed together for the trip home(hopin i didnt hurt it...) was about 20miles...

The stub shaft should be left in the bearing. You will hurt the bearing without it being torqued. Other than that, I'd at least stuff a rag in the end of the tube, to keep as much dirt as possible from entering the housing .

I've seen more than one time on here the bearing being ruined from not being torqued correctly. But , it may have been from a prolonged period of time. I don't see 20 miles hurting it. (much) LOL
