Default Remove Transmission Question

1999 1500 4x4

I suspect a cracked flexplate, I have elected to pull the trans verse the engine, my question is: Do I have to drain the trans fluid? I just did a trans service and would rather not lose the fluid...

If you leave it full, I suspect that it will our out of fill tube. I recovered mine using a paint filter and clean jug.

I thought about that or through the trans cooler ports... Better be safe I guess or I will be wearing the fluid lol.

Line cittings can be capped, but I don't know of a good way to plug fill tube. Just keep it clean, and I recommend filtering through (automotive) paint filter to be sure it is clean and no debris falling into it. I use a funnel on a gallon jug to reduce splatter and chance of contamination. I will be pulling mine back out again this weekend to fix a little second gear engine flare.

It would be much easier to drain if you had a drain plug. When I did the fluid and filter in my trans, I put in a drain plug from Summit Racing. It was only about $6 if I remember correctly.
