Default Rear Diff 9 1/4 with 4:10 gears trouble

Hey fellas,. My whining noise turned out to be the rear diff that I just had rebuilt the end of July. Took back to AAmco they drove it , said they told me it could possibly whine.and said it was not hurting anything. And since I supplied the parts they was no warranty. NOW. It sounds REALLY bad, sounds like an air plane is following me. i tried randys , but they only have factory part for that. 800 bux just for the ring and pinion.. Before my rebuild it made no noise. just clutch pieces in pan, after rebuild no noise, for 2000 miles now getting worse every day . Question WHERE ,, do I get GOOD parts, not the dodge junk ?

did your rebuild in July include a new ring and pinion? or just bearings and posi kit?
who did the rebuild? aamco?

the bigger question may be - who are you going to hire to install/repair it? you might want to have them inspect what you have, determine what you need. and ask about future warranty? you might get lucky and get by w/o new R&P, but just new bearings and a proper setup.... maybe.

All of my experiences at AAMCO have been bad ones and i personally will never go there again. When I had my 4.10's put in my a local 4x4 shop I went with the Yukon gears. It cost me $1300 for the entire rebuild of the rear end all seals and whatnot. A week after it was all done I had the "whine" as you do and i took it back. The guy said he would re-do the gears and split the cost with me. I paid $300 and had the ring and pinion replaced and all has been great since. You should be able to get a R&P installed for about $600. Thats what I was quoted at. Best of luck to you

Nope they said it didnt have to have a new ring and pinion at the time.
I think I will take it else where. Just new bearings and a proper setup..would be nice.

Oh mercy , drove (nursed ) it about 6 miles to work today <OMG>
Sounds like some one following me with an industrial blender..
I know a real good mechanic .. but he is way across town,
I think I will take it back to AAmco tomorrow.
Just so as I can say , you was wrong, its hurting something,
tear it down and lets see what it wasnt hurting.

probably not a bad plan.
it gives them a chance to warranty it (or not)
just be prepared to tow it elsewhere if you don't like their answer. don't be held hostage.

The gear set is rarely the problem, it's almost always the install.

Don't even screw with AAMCO. I mean, what do you really have to gain? If they FUBARed it once, they likely don't know how to do it correctly, and will likely hose another set. Maybe press them for a refund of the labor, but don't give them another chance to blow it.

Call PORC (performance off road center) in Georgia and order a set of Yukon gears for the 9 1\4 rear end. They had the best price on gears a couple of years ago when I was shopping around. If you've got a place in your area that does only rear end or axle work, go there. If not, take it to the mechanic you know across town.

Whatever you do, don't take it to a 4Wheelparts store, they ruined a set of gears for me once.
