Default Ram excessive steer play

My newly purchased 98 ram has major steer play, I don't hear any clanking in the steering column or anything, just seems to have way too much play. I found this website..do you think this is something for me to try? Any help would be appreciated, and thanks ahead for the the help and glad to be part of Ram community

Rocksolid will only cure the clunking sound in the column when turning the steering wheel. It will not tighten steering.

There are several things to check. Have someone get in while you are looking at steeering linkage and they turn weheel back and forth. Look for tie rods, Idler arm, or pitman arm excess movement (especially up and down movement). Yank on ie rods to see if they feel loose. If so, that could be your problem.

Also, if you go to FAQ/DIY section, you can download service manual. There is a section on adjusting steering gearbox. A little tricky, but doable (is that a word?).

If you have the clunking, the rocksolid is a good fix for that.

Replacing the beat trackbar in mine cleared up alot of the steering slop. But definitely check the rest of the steering gear for play too.

If you go to User Profile, click on it, and enter information about your truck such as engine size, tansmission, 2wd or 4x4, etc, it will make it easier for users to answer questions as they will know what you are driving.

For example, my Ram is 2wd, so I do not know anything about Ram 4x4 issues other than what I have read here. It will also keep you from having to re-enter this information.

just a suggestion.....

Talking Steering much better!

Just installed the kit, make a huge dfference, I did find it funny that the directions stated to do this mad in a cool temp so everything will be cold and not expanded from any heat...well the temp dropped to 16 degrees for me. Thanks Albuquerque weather!
Anyway, I left the column in the truck, very easy fix, I did have to sand the ID a little bit, and driving it in took a few minutes to find the correct beating device, but it is in and I adjusted the steering box and it feels like a new truck!

best $60 I have spent in a very long time!
