98 ram 5.9L running really wierd
My uncle had a 96 5.9 which got real hot one day pulling a trailer. It kept overheating and we tried everything to get it to run cool, and nothing would work. Ended up hauling it home and he drove it to the dealership. Come to find out, the heads were cracked. The funny thing is he said it would run great, still do over 100 mph with ease but it wouldn't stay cool.
I have read alot of posts on other sites and a few blogs about this problem with the cracked heads. Mopar does know about it, but will do nothing for you. Almost made me not buy my Dodge, but after figuring if I run into this problem I will do just what ljpierce_ely did and go with after market heads. Mopar(IE Daimler Chrysler) will never admite they are wrong, unless the Fed's or a court make them. No differant then their cheap paint jobs. So for the privilage of driving a Dodge, we just have to deal with it.
For what its all worth (probably nothing), I put in a complaint with NHTSA, ODI (Office of Defect Investigation). Haven't heard anything, and I'm not holding my breath either.
It stands to reason why Mopar won't acknowledge the problem. How many of these 5.9L Magnums were built? And does it include the 5.2L? Then double the number for the cylinder heads that have to be replaced. The cost of a recall would cost DC millions upon millions of bucks that would probably put them back into bankruptcy again. Then they'd have to bring back the K car to get out of it. Oh boy!!! Now that was a gutless wonder.
I can understand why they won't acknowledge it, but heck, I'm greedy. Pay me some hush money (enough to cover the repairs and little extra for giggles) and I'll shut up about it!! On the plus side, I love this truck over the Chebbys and Furds even with its problem(s).
