A free flowing filter of your choice, and cool air ducted in from outside the engine compartment somewhere would be 'best'. Even the stock location isn't really 'cold' air. It draws from the fender, and the fender has vents that get the air from inside the engine compartment. So, all those purported "cold air" system, that draw air from the same location as stock.... aren't really "cold" air either. The advantage they DO have though, is they flow better than the stock system, so, there IS an improvement there. (in my book, somewhat better than the 14x3 system for around town. Not sure you would notice any difference between the two system on the highway though.)

I think it would be a close call between doing the 14x3, and just putting a high quality air filter in the stock box...... I want to do cowl induction, and draw high pressure air off the base of the windshield..... (at least, it is on the highway....) I don't care for forward facing scoops on a truck that I go off-road with...... Don't want to give it the opportunity to funnel water directly into the engine.....

A 14x3 would actually be better than the stock system for water crossings.....

About stiffening up the steering on these trucks, there are a few people on this forum that have done the "rock solid ram steering fix" shich involves replacing a spring a some other small parts at the base of the steering column with a highly durable bushing.

I ordered mine 2 weeks ago but have not recieved it yet.

Youw ill run WORSE unless you get a K&N or cloth HpR (Spectre) filter. The paper filter will choke that engine.

This is the "best" filter in terms of cost (25 bucks), getting air in (MPG and power gain), but it lets lots of dirt by (Foam element):

FWIW, I took off the filter in my sig and put on the stock airbox. Much better power with the stock box and a K&N air filter.

You MUST replace the paper filter with a cloth one.

The Spectre filter is pretty good. Seals well too.
I noticed a bit of throttle response increase when I put the new one on. And it is not even like my old paper was that dirty either.
You can also leave off the intake tube from the fender and it makes the sucking noise like the 14x3 and increases the response a little more.
